  • Get to a safe place and call the police or call the 24-hour sexual assault crisis line at 910-947-3333.
  • If there is a chance you want to report the incident to the police, do not shower, bathe, change clothes or straighten up the area until the evidence can be collected. You can decide later whether to prosecute, but once the evidence is lost, it can never be recovered.
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. It is important that you receive medical treatment for the injuries, allow for collection of evidence, help the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.  (you can request a friend to friend advocate to meet you at the hospital to assist and support you through this process.
  • If you suspect that you may have been drugged, if you feel dizzy, confused of have sudden other unexplained symptoms, be sure to inform the doctor at the hospital and request a urine test to detect the presence of sedating substances.

Please remember, rape is a violent act of degradation and control. Whether the assailant is known to the survivor or not makes no difference. Rape during marriage is a crime.
