What are the red flags of an abuser?

Does your significant other, parent or child display any of the following:

  • Poor impulse control
  • Explosive temper
  • Emotional dependency
  • Need for immediate reinforcement
  • Low self-esteem
  • Frequent “promises”
  • Jealous behavior
  • Fear of abandonment
  • Grew up in a violent home
  • Gets involved in romantic relationships quickly
  • Lack of empathy
  • Narcissistic
  • Inability to trust others
  • Denies or minimizes violent episodes
  • Likes to be in control
  • May be charming in public, but privately abusive
  • Rigid views or sex roles and/or parenting
  • Tries to convince the abused partner that the abuse is their fault or that they are “crazy”
  • Threatens to kill or harm the partner or others
  • Abuse of animals
  • Degrades the victim
